Yesterday we had a school concert.
I am in 5C and our song was Dynamite. We have been preparing for the concert for almost 9 weeks. At first we were going to do a mash up of thunderstruck and lean on but after about a week everyone wanted a different song. Finally we all agreed on dynamite. The majority of the dance we copied off a just dance video. Like any class we had some amazingly talented people. Sophie and Charlize are amazing gymnasts and they performed a backwards walkover. Then there was Amelia, Sabine and Madi who all did a snipet of Irish dancing. There are some other acts that I won’t mention. To be honest I felt really comfortable throughout this whole experience. Not even when I was onstage did I feel nervous. I think it went really well.
Global Warming = Climate Change
StandardToday an expert came to talk about climate change, her name is Ceri (pronounced Kerry) and she is a meteorologist. Ceri talked about what climate change was and how the cycle of climate change works. First of all Ceri talked about… no, told us that humans are the cause of climate change and global warming.
Climate change is caused by global warming. Global warming is basically when carbon dioxide (co2) make a big blanket in the atmosphere and traps all this hot air inside the atmosphere which is melting glaciers and polar ice caps. Another effect is the oceans are rising about 6 inches each century. The oceans are also getting hotter by about 1 or 2 degrees. Now, the oceans warming by 1 or 2 degrees might not sound too bad but it’s actually a real problem. All marine life are really sensitive and when the ocean warms the whole species of some marine life can suffer. Take seals for example. You might have heard of the great pacific blob. Well what happened was all these seal families fishing spot became about 1 degree warmer and all the fish left. All the baby seals starved so the all came onto the shore and scared all these anchovies into this shallow little place near the shore which cased the blob effect and look.
I learnt so much when Ceri came and gave us a talk. The one thing that I really can’t get out of my mind is that cows actually fart out methane which effects the atmosphere.
Order, Order In The Court
Standard“Coal. Coal isn’t very sustainable…” (that is me talking).
This morning me and everyone else in my class went to see Anne, someone from Western Water. Everyone split into groups to read some information about sustainable and non sustainable practices. I was in a group with Sophie.

Sophie and I had information on Coal Power Production and Water Use. I learnt that coal power plants actually take water out of rivers and streams to cool down the coal. Then when they are finished with the water they pump it back into the rivers and streams. Because the water cools down the coal it is polluted so when it is back in the rivers and streams it pollutes the water way and kills fish and plants.
To make it more fun we made the sharing of information into a court argument where we told our thoughts to the judge (Sabine). Even though it was fun it doesn’t mean you don’t learn anything. I learnt that disposable bottled water cost around $3-$7 and it only holds 1 liter of water. You could drink 725 glasses of water from the tap and it will cost 10c at the most.

Resilience
StandardResilience is very different than giving up. Resilience means you experience, you feel, you fail, you hurt, you fall, but you keep on going. Think of a basketball. If you hit it down it bounces back up, that is what resilience is about bouncing back up.
Today all the year 5s were required to sing a resilience song at assembly. We chose titanium because almost every word ties in with resilience. When Sia was younger she was bullied and she didn’t like it and it hurt but she stopped caring and started ignoring them all.
Like Sia I was also bullied but after a while I stopped caring and it stopped hurting and then eventually they all stopped. Gymnastics, I stopped doing lessons when I was in grade 1 and now I regret it. I was trying to do a back bend and I fell on my head but I still kept on trying. That was being resilient.
I found these quotes on the web about resilience.
The Wolf’s Story
StandardLittle Red Riding Hood is good right? Well from the wolf’s point of view she’s not. “The Wolf’s Story” is about the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood but from the wolf’s point of view. Little Red Riding Hood always just had to come with her little sticky toffee’s to grandmas house, the wolf was just trying to save grandmas teeth from the toffee. One day Little Red Riding Hood was walking down the path with and extra large basket of toffees, The wolf tried to warn grandma when grandma fell into the closet and knocked her head. So the wolf put on grandmas clothes and tried to cover up. That’s all, the wolf wasn’t bad.
The Theme In the Book Was…
There is not just one side of the story. The person that looked bad in one of the stories may look good in another story. You can’t come to a conclusion after hearing one story because it may not be entirely true. Usually the truth is in between both sides of the story.
I’m an expert on…
StandardOn Wednesday the 7th of September all the grade 5s had a Science Expo. We all worked extremely hard to complete the mammoth task of completing our presentation before Wednesday. The topics everyone did were all so different which made the Science Expo work really well. I was working hard to explain what DNA is. On the day everyone set up like a stall on a table in the room where they would explain their topic to anyone who came to listen. All the tables were set up so that our guests could move around throughout all three classrooms without having to squeeze past any tables. Part of our criteria was we had to put all of the information we found on a piece of A2 paper to make a poster. We also had to make a model. For me the models were the thing that drew the guests to your stall, the guests would see the model and would be intrigued to know what it is. For me it really made the science expo interesting. The only downside was that we had to stand at the table for about an hour and after a while it got a bit boring explains the exact same thing all over again. Luckily I had someone to play with in between presenting, her name was Isobel and she loved to draw. It gave me great pleasure to draw with her. Plus I had her extremely talented sister Amelia presenting right next to me, it made the science expo much more fun.
Explanation text
StandardBelow is my piece of writing. An Explanation Text. For me it was quite hard to choose a topic that doesn’t include me needing to go first, then, finally seeing as that would be an instructional text.i had three main parts of my explanation text, all I thought I did quite well. The first part of the piece was the introduction. In the introduction I explained the topic very deeply so that anyone whom reads it will understand and know some background knowledge. The next part of the piece I did really well was I put in some scientific words but not too many so that if a kid was to read my piece they could still understand it. Finally I thought I really ended my piece really well because I used my last paragraph really well by wrapping it up in a really great way ( suggested to me by my teacher).
Look Down… Slip… Fall
StandardSweat, fear, it takes over. I want to do it, no, I will do it. Just take a deep breath Grace and stop being a wimp, I can’t, but I must. Suddenly the people in front of me have just disappeared! I look down, it’s like a cliff it just drops forever. It’s like a living scene from an action movie. I step up to the “cliff”, my hands grip the tree branch at the very top of the cliff. No turning back now. My hands slip, I drop.
Yarn… Not the material a different Yarn
StandardMy yarn is about an indigenous girl called Akala who whitenesses the arrival of the first fleet at Botany Bay.A yarn is a retell of a event just exaggerating it. In aisles eyes the yarn is about when the “white aliens” came to Botany Bay.
Sadly the video won’t upload so you can’t witness my amazing acting skills.
This is my script: I must be crazy , yesterday I saw aliens I did. White they were very strange ain’t it, haven’t seen that color skin before, I haven’t, probably just lay in mud I say mud just dried I tell me tribe but they don’no. I tell yea they don’t listen I say. Came on the 18th of January they Did, came in big metal blocks, holding long metal sticks that hurt whenever they pointed at us. Told me tribe we were under attack I did, we all went crazy. Tried to calm am I did but they ain’t listening to me they ain’t. I scared I’m away I did those white aliens, I come out of those bushes and they start head on for home. I was happy until I hear words about them killing me mates down in Tassie, tried to fight em off but instead they got hurted by those metal sticks. That day over 2000 brave men tried to stop those aliens but died trying. My tribe and lots of other tribes hid in the bush, were not coming out not now not ever.
Olympic Games, ᎾᏞᎠ to NEW
StandardThe Olympic games will start in 57 days. But century’s ago what was it like? Well a long time ago the Olympic games were a religious event to celebrate the gods and the people of Olympia. Men would take part in lots of events to show their appreciation of the god keeping them safe. And they participated in the Olympic games nude! But that’s the same as today’s Olympic games right? No. First of all women couldn’t participate in the religious games but women can now can’t they. The religious games continued for 12 century’s until emperor Theodosius changed it to a competition. Imagine if we still had the old Olympic games, everyone on TV would be nude!
